Cakes bring joy to every occasion, and when we talk about cakes, the Black Forest Cake is a classic favorite. Originated from Germany, this luscious delight is a combination of rich chocolate cake, whipped cream, and cherries. In this article, I will guide you step-by-step to make a Black Forest Cake from scratch. Let’s get started!

Ingredients

  • 200 grams (1 1/2 cups) of all-purpose flour
  • 60 grams (1/2 cup) of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 200 grams (1 cup) of granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 240 milliliters (1 cup) of milk
  • 120 milliliters (1/2 cup) of vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons of pure vanilla extract
  • 240 milliliters (1 cup) of boiling water
  • 480 milliliters (2 cups) of heavy whipping cream
  • 400 grams (2 cups) of cherries, pitted and halved

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and grease a 9-inch cake pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until the batter is smooth.
  4. Gradually add the boiling water and continue to mix until the batter is well combined.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for about 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean.
  6. While the cake is cooling, whip the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.
  7. Once the cake is cool, cut it in half horizontally. Spread a layer of whipped cream and cherries on the bottom half, then place the second half on top. Spread another layer of whipped cream on top and decorate with the remaining cherries.

Notes/Tips

  • Ensure all your ingredients are at room temperature before you start baking, for a smooth and even mixture.
  • Adding boiling water to the batter helps to bloom the cocoa powder, resulting in a deeper chocolate flavor.
  • For an adult version, you can soak the cherries in a little bit of kirsch (cherry schnapps) before adding them to the cake.

Conclusion

Making a Black Forest Cake may seem daunting, but with this easy-to-follow recipe, you’re sure to succeed. Enjoy the process and the delicious result. This cake is perfect for any occasion, or simply as a treat for yourself. Happy baking!
