Zesty Italian Meatball Subs Recipe

Welcome to my kitchen! Today, I’ll be sharing with you my delicious recipe for zesty Italian meatball subs. This mouthwatering dish is perfect for those who love the flavors of Italy combined with the comfort of a sandwich. So, let’s get started!

Ingredients

– 500g (1.1 lb) ground beef

– 250g (0.55 lb) ground pork

– 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

– 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

– 2 cloves garlic, minced

– 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley

– 1 teaspoon dried oregano

– 1/2 teaspoon salt

– 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

– 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

– 1/4 cup milk

– 1 egg, beaten

– 4 sub rolls

– 1 cup marinara sauce

– 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

– Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Directions

1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, breadcrumbs, Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, parsley, oregano, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes, milk, and beaten egg. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly combined.

2. Shape the mixture into meatballs, approximately 1 inch in diameter.

3. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

4. Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a drizzle of olive oil. Cook the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

5. Slice the sub rolls lengthwise, but not all the way through. Place them on a baking sheet.

6. Spread marinara sauce on the bottom half of each roll. Place the cooked meatballs on top, followed by a generous sprinkle of shredded mozzarella cheese.

7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

8. Remove from the oven and garnish with fresh basil leaves.

9. Serve the zesty Italian meatball subs hot and enjoy!

Notes/Tips

– You can use a mixture of ground beef and ground pork for a more flavorful meatball. However, feel free to use all ground beef if you prefer.

– If you like it spicy, add more red pepper flakes to the meatball mixture.

– Freshly grated Parmesan cheese adds a stronger flavor, but pre-grated Parmesan works well too.

– Feel free to customize your meatball subs with additional toppings such as sliced onions, bell peppers, or your favorite cheese.
